CAABertie

Welcome! Companion Animal Advocates of Bertie was formed in 2022 from an organic outpouring of community concern regarding the welfare of companion animals in Bertie County, North Carolina.

Instead of complaining about the harsh conditions some animals in the county experienced, a small group of advocates decided to do something to help fix the problems. Although our founding advocates identified multiple issues, they decided to tighten the focus to companion animals, with a narrow focus on cats and dogs. Our advocates seek to help them have better living conditions throughout the county.

In July of 2022, Bertie citizen Beth Northcott proposed an ordinance to require tethered dogs to have adequate shelter, food, and water while tied out. The county commissioners did not agree to this due to enforcement concerns. However, they did accept her offer to start an animal welfare task force.

Within a few days of forming this new group, other local citizens joined Beth on this mission. They named the committee and Companion Animal Advocates of Bertie members now use their voices to speak up for pets.

How We Chose our Name (It Is Meaningful to Us!)

Companion Animal Advocates of Bertie is not an animal shelter, nor are we a rescue group. We work independently of the local shelter to address root causes that cause unsafe and unjust conditions for local cats and dogs.

The group chose to include the term “advocate” in their title with intent. The word advocate comes from Latin. Loosely translated into modern English, the verb means to speak up for or to make a case on behalf of someone less fortunate. As a noun, it indicates a person speaking for someone else.
